Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) Benefits: Understanding the Process

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is a federal government program that is designed to provide disabled individuals with an income when they are so severely disabled that they are unable to work.

A person seeking SSDI benefits must file an application with the Social Security Administration (SSA). In order to be approved for benefits, the SSA must determine that the applicant is disabled. The SSA’s definition of the term “disabled” means the person is unable “to engage in substantial gainful activity” because of a mental or physical impairment that is expected to last at least a year or result in the death of the applicant.

The amount of SSDI benefits a disabled person will receive is based on past work history and the amount paid into the Social Security system over time. In addition to being disabled under the SSA’s definition, the claimant must also have been employed for at least 5 of the past 10 years.

In some circumstances, a claimant’s heirs or widow may be eligible for benefits as well.

Are you Eligible for SSDI?

In order to be eligible for SSDI, The Social Security Administration (SSA) must determine that you are disabled. The SSA looks at the following criteria to determine whether an applicant is disabled. A person is disabled if they are not able to:

  • Engage in substantial, gainful activity due to a medical, physical or mental ailment that may result in death or has lasted, or can be expected to last, for at least one year;
  • Execute the requirements of the job they held before they became impaired;
  • Adjust to other types of work because of the physical or psychological impairment combined with their level of education, age, and past experience; and if
  • The disability is a result of a provable psychological or physical abnormality.
