How Do I Check The Status Of My Social Security Disability Claim?

If you have a disability that prevents you from working and earning an income and enjoying life to the fullest, you may feel overwhelmed, stressed out, and full of financial anxiety. Bills may be piling up and you may be wondering where to turn and what to do. This can particularly be the case if you have already filed a claim for Social Security Disability benefits, and you feel as if you are simply in a holding pattern, waiting to find out news about when and if you might receive those benefits. Your frustration in this situation is understandable.

Fortunately, there are some simple steps you can take to continue to follow up on the status of your claim and to ensure that it is moving along. At The London Eligibility, we’re here for you, and we are happy not only to help you initially file your claim, but also to walk with you throughout the process as you continue to follow up on the status of that claim, and to ensure that you put your best foot forward toward seeking the compensation you need and deserve.

How Often Should You Check the Status of Your Claim?

We are also often asked how often an applicant should check the status of a claim. First of all, it is important to keep in mind that there are many claims filed every day in Social Security Disability offices across the country. As a result, processing of claims may not occur as quickly as applicants might like – but rest assured, the wheels usually are in motion.

Typically, it takes about a month or to enter your claim into the system, gather necessary medical records, and assemble your file. As a result, it is usually advised to wait approximately 30 days before contacting your local Social Security Disability office regarding the status of your claim. At that point, you will usually be able to find out whether any additional information is needed to process your claim.

Checking Up On Your Claim

Once the initial 30-day time period has passed, you’ll likely be wondering who to call, and how often. Of course, you can always contact your attorney regarding the status of your claim. This is always an option, and your attorney should be able to check in on your claim and advise you as to its progress. Additionally, you can:

1). Call your local Social Security office: Calling your local Social Security office and speaking to a disability claims representative regarding the status of your claim can always be helpful. Usually, a claims representative can provide a general update on the status of your claim. Generally, however, they will not be able to provide a great deal of detail on when a decision will be issued, or whether any particular obstacles are delaying your claim.

2). Check the status of your claim online: If you have a “My Social Security” account, you can check the status of your claim at https://secure.ssa.gov/RIL/SiView.do. If you haven’t created an account, doing so is fairly quick and easy. As is the case with contacting a representative by phone, when you check the status of your claim online you will be able to find general information on the status of your claim but not typically not specific details as to the date a decision will be issued, or any specific issues with the claim itself.

Hopefully, through either of the foregoing options, or through contacting your attorney, you will be able to obtain helpful information regarding where your claim is in the process, and what steps you can take to ensure that it continues to move forward. Remember to continue to check-in at regular intervals – at least once a month or so, to be certain that you have the most up-to-date information on the status of your application for benefits.
